Bike Checklist – Ready to Ride Without Worries!
Whether you’re heading out on a road bike or mountain bike yourself, or letting your son or daughter embark on a ride, good preparation is essential. By doing a quick check beforehand, you can avoid issues on the road and ensure a safe and enjoyable ride. Here’s a handy checklist for both cyclists and parents!
1. What to Bring?
- Phone with enough battery (or a power bank)
- Emergency contact numbers (like parents or friends) written down on paper
- Snacks and drinks, especially if the ride is expected to be longer than planned
- ID and some cash for emergencies
- Lights and reflectors, especially when riding early in the morning or in the evening
- First aid kit with plasters and disinfectant for minor accidents
- Small lock to secure the bike at stops
- Supermarket stops: Perfect for a quick snack along the way
- Free water points: Use the 'Waterspots' app to find free water refill stations in the Netherlands
- Sun protection: Sunscreen and light arm or leg protectors are useful for hot weather
2. Trouble on the Road? Be Prepared!
- Spare inner tube and tire levers in case of a flat
- CO2 pump or regular pump to quickly inflate the tire
- Note! CO2 cartridges can get very cold when used. Wear gloves or wrap a cloth around the cartridge to prevent frostbite on your fingers!
- Tubeless? Bring a plug kit for quick repairs
- Backup hand pump: In case the CO2 cartridges run out, a small hand pump can be a lifesaver
- Pre-ride check: Make sure the wheels are properly secured and the quick-release or thru-axle is tightened
- Check tires and brakes: Ensure the tires have enough pressure and the brakes are working properly before heading out
- Helmet check: Make sure the helmet is properly adjusted and fits snugly
- Practice at home: Try changing an inner tube or using a plug, ideally with parents or friends, so everyone knows what to do in case of a problem.
3. After the Ride – Maintenance and Recovery
- Clean the chain to keep the bike in top condition
- Eat the right amount of protein and carbohydrates soon after riding for proper recovery
- Drink plenty of water to replenish lost fluids
4. Extra Tips for a Safe Ride
- Plan your route: Review the route beforehand and inform someone about your ride, especially if riding alone
- Check the weather: Adjust clothing and gear accordingly (rain jacket, sunscreen, etc.)
- Footwear and pedals: Ensure shoes and pedals are clean and in good condition for optimal grip and control
For Parents: How You Can Help
- Discuss the route in advance and ensure your child knows how to handle unexpected situations
- Let your child practice replacing an inner tube or repairing a tubeless tire
- Have an emergency plan: Discuss what to do if something goes wrong and make sure you're reachable
Ready to Ride?
By preparing together, you can avoid unnecessary problems and head out with peace of mind. Make this checklist a habit and enjoy a safe and enjoyable ride!
